An encyclopaedic account of the achievements in the study of Tourette syndrome (TS) and associated disorders between 1980 and 1992. Coverage includes research on the genetics and neurochemistry of TS and neuroimaging studies using MRI, PET and SPECT to delineate underlying brain mechanisms.
This volume presents an account of the achievements in the 1980s in the study and treatment of Tourette Syndrome (TS) and associated disorders. More than 90 authorities from all relevant basic science, clinical, and behavioural science disciplines highlight the major developments worldwide. Coverage includes research on the genetics and neurochemistry of TS and neuroimaging studies using MRI, PET, and SPECT to delineate underlying brain mechanisms. Clinical findings presented reveal that the severity of TS varies widely among patients, that tics tend to diminish during adolescence and adulthood, and that comorbid conditions - such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - are often the chief sources of impairment. The book offers guidelines on pharmacotherapy for tics and comorbid OCD and ADHD, as well as on behavioural and psychosocial therapies and education of children with TS.
