As the number of people aged 65 years and above rises, physicians are increasingly confronted by elderly patients with impaired renal function, altered drug metabolism and multiple comorbidities. This book examines in detail the nature of renal injury in the elderly and its optimal management. In addition, the assessment of glomerular filtration rate in the elderly and the role of novel renal biomarkers are carefully examined. Michael Haase graduated from the Humboldt University of Berlin, Faculty of Medicine in 2002. Between 2005 and 2007 he did his postdoctoral thesis at the Department of Intensive Care, Austin Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Since 2010 he has worked as staff specialist in nephrology at the Department of Nephrology, Hypertension, Diabetes, and Endocrinology, Medical Faculty of the Otto von Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany, where he is an Assistant Professor. His main research interest is the prediction and prevention of acute kidney injury and the pathophysiological understanding of tubular damage biomarkers. He has published more than 70 scientific publications and 10 book chapters. His current h-index is 20. Michael Haase is editor of the Clinical Kidney Journal (formerly NDT Plus) and serves as a reviewer for more than 25 peer-reviewed journals including Nature Medicine, Circulation, and The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. He received the Nils Alwall Prize 2009, the highest clinical award endowed by the German Society of Nephrology.
