Recognizing that social science can contribute towards pharmaceutical service delivery, this text discusses theories and concepts of medical sociology which may be of use to pharmacists, from the Nuffield report on pharmacy, to sociological perspectives on the experience of illness.
This book is intended to acquaint the reader with some of the basic theories and concepts of medical sociology and their application to aspects of pharmaceutical service delivery. This book was written in response to the recognition that social science can contribute towards equipping pharmacists for practice in the 1990's and beyond. An inter-disciplinary approach was adopted to the preparation of this book. The topics covered are by no means exhaustive, rather those issues considered to be most important are addressed.

Social science and pharmacy; the development of pharmacy - setting the scene; sociological understanding of health and illness; lay health beliefs and "Help Seeking" behaviour; social factors and health; social inequalities and health; is pharmacy a profession?; health education and health promotion; pharmacists and health promotion; social science research methods.
