The Diploma for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists is an examination to establish that a medical practitioner is adequately prepared to undertake obstetrics and gynaecology in a general practice setting. This book aims to provide basic knowledge of the syllabus and to assist the candidate to pass the examination. It begins by describing the structure of the examination in detail and devoting a chapter to each section. In these chapters advise on preparation is given and example questions are provided for practice. It is emphasized in the text that the place to learn obstetrics and gynaecology is on the wards, clinics and in theatre. Discussion with colleagues and background reading is essential, as there are many areas of controversy. In covering the syllabus the authors have aimed for a "common sense" approach and have not dealt with minutiae. They have outlined controversial areas and acknowledged that other views exist. Each chapter commences with a section outlining the "expectations of the examiners" to provide guidance for the candidate to concentrate on the core of the subject.
The coverage is not definitive and should be augmented with other texts, outlined in the suggested reading list.
