Complications due to bleeding and thrombosis are associated with many of the major clinical problems faced in obstetric and gynaecological practice. This work covers the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy, as well as other related topics.
Complications due to bleeding and thrombosis are associated with many of the major clinical problems faced in obstetric and gynaecological practice. This book provides a comprehensive review of these problems by an international panel of authors active in clinical practice, teaching and research in their topics. The book deals with the physiology of haemostasis and blood rheology in general, the changes seen in normal pregnancy and the development of the coagulation system in the foetus. Obstetric and gynaecological haemorrhage is reviewed both from the viewpoint of the clinical obstetrician and gynaecologist, and the haematologist. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy is dealt with over several chapters. These highlight the problems peculiar to the pregnant situation and their management, such as the effects of anticoagulants on the fetus and the often neglected area of the longterm outcome for women suffering from venous thromboembolism in association with pregnancy.
Congenital and acquired disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis in relation to gynaecological practice, the pregnant situation, and the foetus and neonate, including prenatal diagnosis, are examined, providing information and experience of the management of these problems. Also covered is the common problem of menorrhagia and the relationship between the oral contraception pill and hormone replacement therapy and thrombosis.
