This introductory textbook concentrates on the essential techniques of eye examination and on the clinical elements needed by a non-ophthalmologist. Aimed specifically at medical students and junior doctors, the book emphasizes topic teaching and ophthalmic signs in systemic disorders. This edition has been revised and updated to include additional notes on such topics as carotid insufficiency retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, central serous retinopathy and retinal pigment epithelial detachments. The newer treatments with intraocular lenses, refractive corneal surgery and trabeculopasty, iridotomy and capsulotomy with lasers are also mentioned.

Part 1 Basic sciences: anatomy of the eye and visual system; ophthalmic optics; physiology of vision. Part 2 Examination and interpretation: eye examination by the general physician; instrumental examination of the eye; interpretation of ophthalmoscopic changes. Part 3 Clinical topics: retinal vascular disease; optic disc oedema and optic atrophy; glaucoma; squint and amblyopia; failing vision in old people. Part 4 Casualty officer ophthalmology: injuries; painful red eyes; the watering eye; sudden loss of vision.
