This volume gives a detailed description of the nature of an early human embryo, what is meant by experimentation on it, and what reasons there might be for such work. The realities of genetic engineering, the problems of infertile couples and legal complications which may follow are also examined.
This volume discusses, in a manner that will be readily understood by non-specialists, the nature of an early human embryo, what is meant by experimentation on it and what reasons and justifications there might be for such work. The realities of genetic engineering, said to offer the promise of ending hereditary disease, the problems of infertile couples and legal complications arising from the procedures followed are also examined. The book attempts to cover a variety of questions that concern and puzzle the public, such as how embryos develop, why some men and women are infertile, how test-tube babies are created and whether it is genetically possible to make human clones.

Part 1 The natural course of events: egg and sperm; the congregation of eggs and sperm; fertilization; early development of the embryo; implantation and further development; conjoined twins; deaths in embryos and fetuses; when does a person's life really begin. Part 2 Variations on the theme: fertilizing eggs and growing and transferring embryos; how far can we grow embryos in culture?; producing chimeras and hybrids; parthenogenesis; cloning in animals and human beings; low-temperature storage of sperm, eggs and embryos; genetic engineering; ascertaining sex before birth; congenital and inherited traits and diseases; prevention, early diagnosis and treatment; what might be gained by further experiments on human embryos. Part 3 The reasons for infertility. Part 4 Ways of overcoming the problem of infertility: infertile women and test-tube babies and surrogacy; infertile men. Part 5 Some aspects of ethics and law in assisted reproduction: the danger of "dehumanization"; the problems of "competing rights"; ectogenesis - possible and permissible?; problems of legal control.
