This book covers the complete field of the pathology of the Gastrointestinal tract - from Abetalipoproteinemia to Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. The alphabetically arranged entries, each of which provides a detailed description of a specific pathological disease pattern, allow readers to quickly and easily find the information they need.

Professor Fatima Carneiro is a pathologist and researcher in the field of gastrointestinal and liver pathology. She received her medical degree in 1978 at the Medical Faculty of Porto, Portugal, where she is currently serving as a full professor of pathology. Since 1993, she has been a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (Ipatimup/i3S). Her research is directed towards the understanding of the etiopathogenesis of gastric cancer and the molecular basis of gastric carcinoma development. Professor Carneiro is a Past President of the European Society of Pathology, Coordinator of the Portugese Network of Tumour Banks, council member of the International Gastric Cancer Association and a Fellow of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences. She has co-authored ca. 300 peer-reviewed publications ("h factor". 54- Scopus). Paula Chaves (born in 1953) graduated in medicine in 1978. She obtained her Board Certification as Pathologist in 1988 and as Consultant Pathologist in 1993. Presently, she is Senior Pathologist at the Instituto Portugues de Oncologica de Lisboa de Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG EPE). She did her PhD in 2001 at the Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Currently, she is Full Professor of Pathology at the Faculdade de Ciencias da Saude, niversidade da Beira Interior, since 2007. Before, she was Auxiliar Professor of Pathology at the Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, since 1993. The mainstream of her professional career lies in the area of Gastrointestinal Pathology. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and has contributed to almost 8 books in this field. Her research interest is in Barrett`s Esophagus, the premalignant condition for esophageal adenocarcima. Actually, her research work contributed for the understanding of differentiation of the distinct cellular phenotypes present in Barrett`s epithelium and their relationship to cancer. Professor Paula Chaves is presently the Director of the Research Center of the Instituto Portugues de Oncologica de Lisboa de Francisco Gentil (IPOLFG EPE). Arzu Ensari finished her training in Pathology in Ankara in 1991, before moving to the UK to pursue a PhD on "Cellular and Molecular Pathology of Gluten Sensitivity" under the supervision of Dr. Michael N. Marsh from 1991 to 1994. She worked with Prof. Yo Kato (Japan) on GI cancer and precursor lesions for three months in 1995. Since then Dr. Ensari has been engaged in gastrointestinal pathology at the Department of Pathology, Ankara University Medical School. In 2008 she worked in Toronto, Canada as a visiting professor with Prof. Robert Riddell, mainly on IBD. Dr. Ensari is a former chair of the GI Pathology working group of the ESP, and is a faculty member of the EScoP GI Pathology working team. She is currently working as a full-time Professor at the Department of Pathology, Ankara University Medical School. Dr. Ensari has published many articels and book chapters on GI pathology. Her major research interests include malabsorption, IBD, polyps and colorectal cancer.
