Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Case Studies for Advanced Practice Nurses
Springer Publishing Co Inc (Verlag)
978-0-8261-2253-7 (ISBN)
This one-of-a-kind book delivers challenging, clinically relevant case-based learning tools regarding orthopedics and sports medicine for advanced practice nursing students and practitioners. Written by nurse practitioner/educators, it fills a gap in information and guidelines for treatment of this population in primary and acute care environments. Cases across the lifespan cover areas of orthopedics and sports medicine most likely to be encountered.
Cases are described in depth to foster a comprehensive learning experience and to facilitate inductive and deductive critical reasoning. Each follows a template that encompasses the context for the case, chief patient complaints and history along with physical assessment findings, diagnostic evaluation, interventions, evaluation of care and outcome, and references for additional information. An accompanying teaching guide aids instructors in accelerating critical thinking.
Key Features:
Fills an identified gap in available literature
Reflects both primary care and acute care across the lifespan
Includes referral red flags and scope of practice for each case
Formats cases for both inductive and deductive reasoning
Offers focused instructor manual to facilitate meaningful learning
Karen Myrick, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, ANP-BC, is Professor, Quinnipiac University, with a joint appointment in the School of Nursing and the Frank Netter School of Medicine. She practices clinically as a nurse practitioner in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Glastonbury and Farmington, CT and her research focuses on athletes and sports medicine. The recipient of multiple grants, Dr. Myrick developed a newly designed physical examination technique for determining hip labral tears, The Hip Internal Rotation with Distraction (THIRD) test. She recently received an award for Outstanding Poster at a national nurse practitioner conference for her work on Recruiting and Retaining the Best and the Brightest Nurse Practitioner Faculty. She also received an award for Outstanding Poster at a regional research alliance conference for her work on MRI Findings of Bone Marrow Edema in Female Division I Soccer Players during a Competitive Season. In addition to publishing regularly in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Myrick has successfully composed an academic book chapter on preventing childhood obesity, and is the Senior Editor of Journal of Clinical Case Reports.
