This is the first English translation, from the original German of 1838, of the first textbook of plastic surgery - a branch of surgery that developed rapidly during the first half of the 19th century. The author, Eduard Zeis (1807-1868) was an experienced surgeon and introduced the term "plastic surgery". Zeis was also the first historian of plastic surgery, and he includes here contemporary literature, as well as the early history of reconstructive operations, extending back to the 15th century in Europe, and earlier in India. He believed that progress in surgery would only be made by increased specialization, and he hoped that his book would encourage this by collecting the relevant historical material and practical instruction into one volume.
