Many malnourished children still die unnecessarily due to inadequate inpatient care. This book describes the ten treatment steps needed to manage these children successfully. It is based on guidelines developed by the World Health Organization and on training modules prepared for nurses in Africa. It takes into account resources in many hospitals and health centres, and the fact that many malnourished chidlren are also HIV+. The book is intended for nurses and other health workers who care for severely malnourished children in developing countries. It also should be useful to their trainers and supervisors.

Explanation of words and terms; severely malnourished children need different care; assess the child; prevent treat hypoglycaemia (step 1); prevent or treat hypothermia (step 2); prevent or treat dehydration (step 3); correct electrolyte imbalance (step 4); treat and prevent infections (step 5); correct micronutrient deficiencies (step 6); start cautious feeding (step 7); give catch-up diet (step 8); provide loving care, play and stimulation (step 9); prepare for discharge and follow up (step 10); support mothers and other carers.
