The preparation and use of leukocyte-poor blood and blood products is one of the most important subjects in transfusion medicine. This title reviews the present knowledge in this field and should be of use to transfusionists, haematologists, oncologists, immunologists and pathologists.
Blood transfusion is never without risk, but recent clinical studies suggest that by reducing the number of leukocytes (white blood cells) in blood products, these risks can be reduced. The method by which the donor's leukocytes affect the recipient's immune system is still iunclear, but this topic has recieved a great deal of research attention in recent years. The preparation and use of leukocyte-poor blood and blood products is thus one of the most important subjects in transfusion medicine. This title reviews the present knowledge in this field and should be of use to transfusionists, haematologists, oncologists, immunologists and pathologists.

Part 1:Production aspects: Collection of leukocyte-depleted platelets using the CS-3000 Plus separator and TNX-6 chamber; Comparison of a "top and bottom" system with a conventional quadruple-bag system for blood-component preparation and storage; Preparation of leukocyte-poor blood components by the nonbutton platelet concnetrate method using quadruple- and quintuple-bag systems; Properties of the Factor VIII/von Willebreand factor complex in stor ed banked blood: Part 2: Laboratory Aspects: Multicenter studies on leukocyte depletion by filtration of red cell and platelet concentrates: methodology and controls; Quality control of leukocyte depletion in blood banking with a flow cytometer: flow cytometry to determine low concentrations of white cells in leukocyte-poor platelet concentrates; Comparison of highly sensitive methods used to count residual leukocytes in filtered red cell and platelet concentrates; Flow cytometric analysis of residual leukocytes in filtered blood components: Part 3: Basic Aspects: Mechanism of leukocyte removal with fibers; Mechanism of leukocyte removal by porous material; Develo pment of polymeric adsorbents for separation of lymphocyte subpopulations; Leukocyte depletion of HTLV-1 carrier red cell concentrates by filters; Mechanisms if immune responses to allo-MHC Class I; UV-B irradiation to platelet concentrates and its effects in vio and in vitro: Part 4: Clinical Aspects: The effects of leukocyte depletion on alloimmunization by platelet transfusions; Leukocyte depletion of red cell and platelet concentrates: clinical importance to patients awaiting organ transplantation; Use of leukocyte-depleting filters for prevention of HLA alloimmunization and refractoriness to platelet trnsfusion; Prevention of immunologic and infectious complications of transfusion by leukocyte depletion; Role of leukocyte depletion from platelet concentrates in reducing HLA alloimmunization and platelet refractoriness in polytransfused patients: a prospective multicenter randomized study in Japan; Leukocyte depletion of blood and blood components: current problems and solutions.
