Peter Przekop, D.O., Ph.D., is an academic physician with appointments in neurology, pediatrics, and psychiatry and an osteopath who directs the pain management track at the Betty Ford Center, a part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Dr. Przekop is originally from Connecticut and developed an interest in athletics at a very early age and competed in college sports. He also began to train in traditional Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong. After he completed a degree in psychology, he was named a Martlett Scholar at McGill University and completed a year of advanced studies in psychology. He began an intense interest in the relationship between mind and body and finished a Masters in psychology and a Ph.D. in neuroscience. His research focused upon the relationship between the developing brain and environmental stimulation.After postdoctoral studies, Dr. Przekop entered osteopathic medical school. After graduation, he pursued training in internal medicine and neurology and then completed a fellowship in addiction and pain. He is Board Certified in Neurology and Addiction Medicine. Since 2004, he has been a member of the faculty at Loma Linda University Medical School, where he holds appointments in psychiatry, pediatrics, and neurology. His interests are in the relationship between pain and brain dysfunction, and he utilizes various techniques including functional imaging studies. Dr. Przekop is also interested in developing integrative treatments for chronic pain patients. He has created an integrated treatment paradigm for chronic pain patients called neurocognitive enhancement. He founded the Pediatric Chronic Pain and Headache Clinic at Loma Linda Children's Hospital in 2008. He has published over 40 articles and is active in teaching students, residents, and fellows.
