Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) creates profound changes throughout every organ system in the body, resulting in an unacceptably high number of adverse outcomes, including myocardial infarction, stroke, neuropsychiatric defects, infection, pulmonary dysfunction, and perioperative bleeding. An understanding of the deviations of homeostasis caused by CPB is needed to minimize the frequency of these adverse effects.
