A practical guide to the latest understanding of this embarrassing, 'invisible' condition - what causes it, why it is controversial, and how to combat it with self-help, medical treatments, psychological support and alternative therapies.
IBS is an invisible disease - sufferers battle on pretending nothing is wrong and hiding their embarrassing symptoms. And it isn't life-threatening - so why would anyone take it seriously? Yet it can seriously restrict how we live, work and play. Based on their experience as both sufferers and health specialists, Dr Arroll and Professor Dancey provide the latest guidance on causes, diagnosis and treatment, including the hugely significant part played by stress.

Dr Megan Arroll is a Chartered Psychologist and a Chartered Scientist with a keen interest in women's health throughout the lifespan. She is Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology at BPP University. She has previously written two books, one on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the other with Prof Christine Dancey on the topic of Invisible Illnesses. Professor Christine Dancey is also a Chartered Health Psychologist and has made major contributions to the IBS scientific literature. She is co-founder of the IBS Network, which is the only national IBS support group in the UK.
