This volume explores the use of mass spectrometry for biomedical applications. Chapters focus on specific therapeutic areas such as oncology, infectious disease and psychiatry. Additional chapters focus on methodology as well as new technologies and instrumentation. This volume provides readers with a comprehensive and informative manual that will allow them to appreciate mass spectrometry and proteomic research but also to initiate and improve their own work. Thus the book acts as a technical guide but also a conceptual guide to the newest information in this exciting field.

Mass spectrometry is the central tool used in proteomic research today and is rapidly becoming indispensable to the biomedical scientist. With the completion of the human genome project and the genomic revolution, the proteomic revolution has followed closely behind. Understanding the human proteome has become critical to basic and clinical biomedical research and holds the promise of providing comprehensive understanding of human physiological processes. In addition, proteomics and mass spectrometry are bringing unprecedented biomarker discovery and are helping to personalize medicine.

Dr. Costel C. Darie started his biomedical career as a nurse at the Murgeni Hospital, Romania. He received his BS and MS in biochemistry at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University from Iasi, Romania, and performed research under Dr. Vlad Artenie. He continued his Ph.D. studies with Dr. Wolfgang Haehnel at the Albert-Ludwigs Universitaet, Freiburg, Germany, after which he worked in the labs of Drs. Paul M. Wassarman & Micsunica Platica (Mount Sinai School of Medicine) and Thomas A. Neubert (New York University Medical Center). He currently is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science at Clarkson University, where he is the lead of the Biochemistry and Proteomics Group.

Dr. Alisa Woods received her BS in psychology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh and her PhD in biology from the University of California, Irvine, with Dr. Christine Gall. She continued with post-doctoral training at the University of Freiburg, Germany, with Dr. Michael Frotscher and completed a Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She is currently a Research Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science at Clarkson University, where she works in the Laboratory for Biochemistry and Proteomics. She is also a counselor and neuropsychology researcher at the Neuropsychology Clinic at SUNY Plattsburgh.
