This unique text/reference highlights a selection of practical applications of advanced image analysis methods for medical images. The book covers the complete methodology for processing, analysing and interpreting diagnostic results of sample CT images. The text also presents significant problems related to new approaches and paradigms in image understanding and semantic image analysis. To further engage the reader, example source code is provided for the implemented algorithms in the described solutions. Features: describes the most important methods and algorithms used for image analysis; examines the fundamentals of cognitive computer image analysis for computer-aided diagnosis and semantic image description; presents original approaches for the semantic analysis of CT perfusion and CT angiography images of the brain and carotid artery; discusses techniques for creating 3D visualisations of large datasets; reviews natural user interfaces in medical imaging systems, including GDL technology.

Prof. Dr. Marek R. Ogiela is a Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Cryptography and Cognitive Informatics Research Group at the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland. He has developed new paradigms of visual pattern cognitive understanding, as well as crypto-biometric secret-sharing threshold schemes.

His publications include the Springer titles Secure Information Management Using Linguistic Threshold Approach, Advances in Cognitive Information Systems, Computational Intelligence Paradigms in Advanced Pattern Classification, Cognitive Techniques in Visual Data Interpretation and Modern Computational Intelligence Methods for the Interpretation of Medical Images.

Dr. Tomasz Hachaj is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Methods of the Pedagogical University of Krakow, Poland. His research interests are in pattern recognition, image processing and computer graphics. He is the author of a few dozen scientific publications in his fields of interest.

Prof. Dr. Marek R. Ogiela and Dr. Tomasz Hachaj are inventors of the innovative GDL technology for multimedia systems and human gesture analysis.
