This "Virtual Clinical Excursions Workbook for Ignatavicius and Workman: Medical-Surgical Nursing - Critical Thinking for Collaborative Care", 4th Edition, instructs the student how to interact with the virtual hospital CD-ROM for each of the workbook lessons. The workbook sends the student into the virtual hospital setting to collect information, make decisions, and set priorities. It also includes a guided tutorial which leads the student through a detailed tour of how to: work with a patient in the virtual hospital; collect patient data from various sources (reports, charts, medications administration record, short video clips and audio clips of nurse-patient interactions); record patient data; listen to a report and make a list of a patient's problems and high priority concerns; and administer medications. The workbook uses important themes such as cultural diversity, client education, nursing research, care of the older adult, and critical thinking to prepare the student for practice.
It presents critical thinking through lessons that require the student to document client-nurse interactions that are comprehensive enough to retrieve critical data, to maintain quality and continuity of care, to track client outcomes, and to reflect contemporary standards. Lessons within the workbook include: health promotion and illness; biopsychosocial concepts related to health care; management of clients with problems of the immune system, such as HIV, immunodeficiencies and infection; management of clients with problems of the respiratory tract; management of clients with problems of the cardiovascular system; management of clients with problems of the nervous system; management of clients with problems of the musculoskeletal system; management of clients with problems of the gastrointestinal system; and management of clients with problems of the endocrine system.
