DNP Capstone Projects

Barbara A. Anderson, DrPH, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, is Director of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Hyden, KY, USA, where she is also full time faculty. A key area of interest has been Integrated Community Development of field courses in health/environment, public health interventions and primary health care in US, Africa, Asia, Central and Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Her research currently focuses on female genital cutting and the impact of the U.S. nursing workforce shortage on access to health care in developing nations. From 1987 to 2005, she actively worked in Maternal Child Health, the Peace Corps and the Department of Global Health at Loma Linda University School of Nursing (CA), supervising, teaching, and conducting field-based faculty training, in low-resource settings (Africa, India, SE Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean). Dr. Anderson serves as book/journal referee for Journal of Midwifery and Women's Health, Journal of Biosocial Science, Medical Anthropology Quarterly,, and Social Science and Medicine, among others. She has served as program Chair and Section Chair for the APHA section Population, Reproductive and Sexual Health. She has been inducted as Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and the American College of Nurse Midwives, among other honors. Dr. Anderson has been the Principal Investigator on five funded research projects (March of dimes, USAID, PAHO), has published nearly 40 journal articles and authored or co-authored several books, including Reproductive health: Women and Men's Shared Responsibility (2005), Caring for the Vulnerable: Perspectives in Nursing Theory, Research, and Practice, 2e(2008), and Poisoned soil, deadly seed: How genocide strangles the roots of human potential(book in process). Joyce M. Knestrick, PhD, CRNP, FAANP, has been Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and DNP Faculty at Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, KY, USA. She has been a Nurse Practitioner since 1986 and currently practices in acute and chronic care at The Primary Care Center of Mt. Morris, PA, USA. Dr. Knestrick directed the NP program at Wheeling Jesuit University (WV) for ten years (1997- 2007) as a tenured faculty before joining the Frontier faculty. She has published and presented locally and nationally on a wide variety of topics related to primary health care and nursing education. Her publications include Guidelines for Distance Education for NONPF in addition to 15 articles and several book chapters including a chapter on women's health issues in Evidence Based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare 2e (2010). Dr. Knestrick has received multiple honours and awards, has served as a reviewer for a number of publishers including Prentice-Hall, and as a consultant on women's health for GlaxoSmithKline. She is Treasurer of NONPF, and serves as Chairman for the SIG distance education group of NONPF. Rebeca Barroso, CNM, DNP is assistant professor at Frontier Nursing University in Hyden, KY, USA. She won the 2011 W. Newton Award from the American College of Nurse-Midwives Foundation to support her replication study on nurse-midwifery burnout. She co-authored a chapter in Best practices in midwifery: Using the evidence to implement change and served as a copy writer for the book. She has mentored DNP students at the University of Minnesota and Frontier Nursing University, USA. She is active in the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and the Minnesota Advanced Practice Nurses Coalition, USA.
