Gene-environment interactions (GxE) are at the core of the book, in particular with a focus on the importance of these in common complex diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, behavioural disorders and cancers. Nutrigenomics and pharmacogenomics are explored in terms of their implications in personalized healthcare and medicine. Ethical, legal and social issues of personal genome testing and their implications for the field are also covered, before the final chapter looks at the future directions in the field with a specific public health genomics perspective.
Bahar Taneri is an Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Famagusta, North Cyprus. After obtaining her PhD degree from The Rockefeller University, New York, USA in 2005, she has returned to her home country and started teaching at EMU. Her main affiliation is to the Program of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Department of Biological Sciences, and Bahar is one of the founding members of this program. In addition to her teaching and research, she has served as the editor-in-chief of EMU's Research Newsletter for two years. Bahar is also an active researcher of the Institute of Public Health Genomics, Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. She has authored several publications in the field of genome biology and alternative splicing. Her current research focus is an efficient translation of genome-based findings into healthcare and medicine. She has received several awards including a Fulbright Scholarship.
