This symposium provided a forum for the discussion of data, ideas and models from the physiological and psychoacoustical standpoints. Development and regeneration - areas where advances have been made - are included in this volume, which should be of interest to auditory research scientists.
The main aim of the symposium on the hearing system is to provide a forum in which data, ideas and models from both the physiological and psychoacoustical standpoints can be presented and discussed. Apart from those areas traditionally covered by such meetings, two areas with important recent advances have been included, viz, development and regeneration. The present volume will be of interest to all scientists working in the field of auditory research.

Part 1 Development and regeneration: plasticity in the mature auditory system, D.R.F. Irvine and R. Rajan; the development of nucleus laminaris in the barn owl, C.E. Carr; effects of acoustic overstimulation on four species of birds, R.J. Dooling and, B.M. Ryals. Part 2 Peripheral processing: development effects in complex sound processing, J.H. Grose et al; speculations on the relation between emission generation and hearing mechanisms in frogs, P. van Dijk and H.P. Wit; spatial periodicity in the cochlea caused by interaction of spontaneous emissions, P.W.J. van Hengel. Part 3 Comparative studies: comparative studies of sound source perception, R.R. Fay; temperature dependence of auditory function in the frog, P.M. Narins; otoacoustic emissions as an indicator for active cochlear mechanics - a primitive property of vertebrate auditory organs, C. Koppl; the avian hearing organ - a status report, G.A. Manley. Part 4 Central neuronal processing: intensity coding - dynamic range shifts in cochlear nerve and nucleus, E.F. Evans and W. Zhao; on the neural code for loudness and its cochlear correlates, J.J. Zwislocki and M. Chatterjee; across frequency integration by neurones in the ventral cochlear nucleus, A.R. Palmer et al. Part 5 Excitation patterns: adaptation and attention in psychoacoustics, B.Scharf; auditory frequency resolution in mammals - from neuronal representation to perception, G. Ehret. Part 6 Pitch perception: pitch of the Zwicker-Tone and masking patterns, H. Fastl and G. Krump; aspects of pitch perception in the ultrasonic Range, S. Schmidt et al. Part 7 Complex spectral analysis: shape discrimination of spectra with various bandwidths, D.M. Green et al; auditory communication in Japanese macaques - salience of acoustic stimulus features, D.B. Moody et al; (Part Contents).
