This text is designed to provide the busy junior doctor with enough information to make instant decisions and carry out any essential procedures required in order to stabilize a patient before handing them over either to the care of a ward or a specialist.
Whilst there are many textbooks of general paediatrics and an even larger number of monographs on specific diseases of childhood, there are no practical guides to the immediate management of paediatric emergencies. This book is designed to provide the busy junior doctor at the front door of the hospital with enough information to make those instant decisions and carry out any essential procedures required in order to stabilise the patient before handing over either to the care of a ward or a specialist. Everything about the book serves this one aim of providing an instant source of practical information when and where it is required. The size of the book means it will fit in a white coat pocket and it has a durable plastic cover. The contents have been written in clear and condensed form consisting very often of tables, lists, simple diagrams, flow charts and action points all of which help to guide the reader straight to the information required. Most importantly Acute Paediatrics has been based on the agreed neonatal and paediatric emergency protocols from Europe's largest children's hospital - Alder Hey in Liverpool.
As such it contains the distilled wisdom of a great many paediatricians and neonatologists with an enormous combined clinical workload written in the form of detailed action plans which are known to work in practice. It is divided into two parts; Neonatal Emergencies and Paediatric Emergencies, each of which consists three subsections: Presentations (signs and symptoms), Conditions (diagnoses) and Skills (specific procedures and techniques)

Part 1: Neonatology: A. Common Presentations: 1. Resuscitation; 2. Respiratory Distress; 3. Deterioration on a Ventilator; 4. Cardiorespiratory or Convulsive Events; 5. Cyanosis; 6.
