"Mosbys Maternal-Newborn Patient Teaching Guides" offer the health care provider, an inexpensive means of access to a large variety of topics for patient teaching. The 3-ring binder includes 100 individual guides addressing significant health issues confronting a woman and her family before, during, and after pregnancy. Like Mosby's other patient teaching guides, each guide is tailored to be copied and given to clients at the appropriate time during or after pregnancy. Unique to this collection are custom-drawn cartoons geared to entice the client to read the guide, or to reinforce significant facts presented in that guide. By adding a little humor, the client will be more at ease and receptive to the information imparted. Also, readability level is aimed at the 6th to 7th grade, suitable for the average reader. The guides are presented in sequential order, and are divided into sections according to stage of pregnancy, from preconception through postpartum. Special situations are addressed in a separate section. The book is indexed and has a thorough table of contents, simplifying access to a particular guide.
The reading level, examples, and illustrations have tried to take into account a diverse population, including multi-cultural characters in the cartoons. Stereotyping is avoided, (i.e. men are referred to as "partners", "mates" or "dad", not as husbands or spouses). In addition to basic, but critical, health information for normal pregnancies, the guides cover high-risk conditions such as pre-eclampsia, deep vein thrombosis, and preterm labor. Throughout the guides, breastfeeding is presented as the normal way to feed babies, and is promoted in an upbeat, positive manner without being zealous. The last three guides address the needs of adoptive families as well as birth mothers.
