Incorporate the principles of Novice to Expert into your classroom Nearly thirty years ago, Pearson published Patricia Benner’s groundbreaking work, From Novice to Expert, which outlined principles that have continued to be the cornerstone of major transformative efforts in nursing education. And now, Pearson has partnered with Dr. Benner to bring nurse educators a robust digital learning solution that empowers them to make the ideals of transforming novice learners to practice-ready professionals a reality for today’s nursing students.

Based on the definitive work of “the Florence Nightingale of our time”, Dr. Patricia Benner, and on the urgent calls for educational transformation from the Carnegie Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with the Institutes of Medicine, and the Quality and Safety for Education of Nurses reports, NovEx is a digital-first, situated learning solution designed to help educators move beyond a focus on developing students’ “critical” thinking abilities and help prepare students that can clinically reason and problem-solve like a real nurse. With its completely immersive learning environment, students are able to apply knowledge as they acquire it.

NovEx's unfolding, patient cases provide practice-centered experiences that enrich the learning of essential content, while its evidence-based content prepares new nurses with the most clinically-salient knowledge to safely care for patients.

Dr. Benner & the NovEx TeamAt Pearson, our mission is to help nursing students improve their lives in measurable ways through learning. And we are proud to bring nursing students and nurse educators a model and application for learning based on the cutting-edge research of the world’s premier nurse educators. The methodology of NovEx is based on the work of Patricia Benner, RN, PhD, Tom Ahrens, RN, PhD and Patricia Hooper Kyriakidis, RN, PhD. Tom Ahrens, RN, PhDThomas (Tom) S. Ahrens, RN, PhD, CCNS, FAAN¿is Chief Executive Officer of St. Louis-based NovEx, the first pedagogically sound, online educational company that enables situated (context-specific) learning. Ahrens, with Kyriakidis and Benner, founded NovEx in 2011. He will additionally serve as Chief Learning Officer at NovEx to ensure that the highest quality educational content is presented in the most practical way. He is also a Research Scientist at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Ahrens has presented extensively both nationally and internationally on critical care topics since 1985. He has also extensively published, including 5 books and over 100 papers. His book¿Hemodynamic Waveform Analysis¿is considered by many to be the finest clinical guide on the topic. His book¿Essentials of Oxygenation¿won an American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year award. Dr. Ahrens is actively involved in technology application, particularly in hemodynamic monitoring and capnography. He has widely published in the application of technology to clinical practice. He was principal investigator of a multi-center study that illustrated how end tidal CO2 could accurately predict survival following cardiac arrests. In 1999, Ahrens was awarded the Presidential Citation by the Society of Critical Care Medicine and in 2004 was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Ahrens is a strong advocate for hospitalized families. He published a research paper that demonstrated how improving communication with high risk patient families can improve both outcome and cost control. He helped design communication programs to aid clinicians and published how nursing can lead the way to better matching patient/family wishes with the plan of care. In 2006, Dr. Ahrens received the "Edge Runner" award by the American Academy of Nursing, which is designated for those people who are developing innovative solutions that eventually become mainstream solutions, for his work with families of hospitalized patients. From 2006—2008 he was American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) representative to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign. In 2008, he was awarded the "Flame of Excellence" award from AACN for sustained and influential work in critical care. Patricia Benner, RN, PhDPatricia Benner, RN, PhD, FAAN, FRCN¿is serving as Chief Faculty Development Officer. Dr. Benner works with Faculty to integrate the NovEx online patient simulations and content. Faculty Development efforts focus on preparing faculty to integrate classroom and clinical teaching and learning while integrating the three Carnegie high-end clinical teaching and learning professional domains: 1) cognitive, science, theory and knowledge; 2) practice know-how and clinical reasoning; and 3) ethical comportment and formation. Dr. Benner directed the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching National Nursing Education Study and published this landmark work in¿Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation.¿This book won the AJN Book of the Year Award and the Prose Award for Scholarly Writing for Publishers. Further, she collaborated with the Carnegie Preparation for the Professions studies of clergy, engineering, law, and medicine. She brings the curricular and pedagogical implications of these studies to NovEx Situated Learning faculty development workshops and learning materials. Her goal is to help faculty and educators across disciplines develop profession-specific pedagogical and curricular strategies for today's students and staff. Dr. Benner is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. She brings 35 years of experience in nursing education with a research focus on clinical reasoning and judgment, the development of expertise from the novice student to the expert practicing clinician, and preventing nursing errors. Her research contributions are published in¿From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Nursing Practice,¿which has been translated into ten languages,¿Expertise in Nursing Practice: Caring, Ethics and Clinical Judgment, Clinical Wisdom and Interventions in Acute and Critical Care,¿and¿Nursing Pathways to Patient Safety.¿Her research also focuses on articulating "on the ground" knowledge and clinical wisdom of the practicing nurse and nurse educators that may not yet be described or articulated in formal theories, science and technology. Dr. Benner's current research, in collaboration with Military Tri-Service Nurse Researchers, is articulating the new experiential knowledge gained in caring for wounded warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan and through rehabilitation. Dr. Benner believes in the potential of NovEx to diminish the Practice-Education gap that currently exists in professions. The NovEx programs provide the learning aids that faculty can use to fill out gaps in their areas of clinical expertise in any semester or quarter long course. In today's highly specialized world, no one faculty member can cover all areas of any one course at an expert practice and science level. NovEx programs provide the essential state of the art learning resources that help faculty meet the challenges of today's specialized professionals. Dr. Benner and her colleagues have designed faculty development workshops and learning materials so faculty can extend and integrate the online learning in the classroom and clinical arenas. Dr. Benner is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She was elected an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Nursing. Her work has influence beyond nursing in the areas of clinical practice, education, clinical ethics and qualitative research methods. She is the recipient of the 2010 President's Award for Creativity and Innovation in Nursing Education, National League for Nursing. Patricia Hooper Kyriakidis, RN, PhDPatricia (Pat) Hooper Kyriakidis, RN, PhD¿is serving as Chief Integrations Officer at NovEx. Kyriakidis will ensure that the faculty has an easily accessible, easy to use faculty aid for situated clinical teaching, coaching and learning in the classroom. The context-based aid will allow faculty to smoothly transition their teaching strategies to an innovative, pedagogically sound, integrative method. Dr. Kyriakidis is also a Consultant at Practice Solution, Inc., in Nashville, TN. She is committed to improving patient care and to closing the widening education-practice gap by preserving and extending the expertise in nursing practice. Dr. Kyriakidis has consulted extensively to educate about and assist in developing expertise in clinical practice, in transforming environments to support expertise and practice development, and in designing and implementing clinical recognition programs since 1995. Her research over the past 22 years has examined the clinical reasoning, judgment, and skillful performance of experts. Recently, she has studied how both administrative supports and situated coaching for practice development influence the clinical and ethical development of new nurses. Dr. Kyriakidis is a nationally known speaker on critical care, practice development, and leadership topics since 1984. As a clinical nurse specialist, Dr. Kyriakidis received the¿Florence Nightingale Award for Foreign Nursing Service¿from the American Red Cross for her clinical service the Cambodian Refugee camps and for opening and teaching in the "Barefoot Doctor" school in the war zone camps. In 1999, she was co-recipient, with Drs. Patricia Benner and Daphne Stannard, of three AJN Book of the Year awards and the Media of the Year award for¿Clinical Wisdom and Interventions in Critical Care: A Thinking-in-Action Approach.
