Suitable for care home staff and managers, occupational therapists and other professionals, relatives and other carers, as well as designers and architects, this book offers simple changes and practical design recommendations to promote independence and wellbeing in people with dementia, in both care homes and domestic residential care settings.
This accessible and fully illustrated guide offers many simple changes and practical design recommendations to promote independence and wellbeing in people with dementia, in both care homes and domestic residential care settings. Topics covered include colour and lighting; materials and contrast; flooring; safety devices and assistive technology; noise and sound; decor; orientation, signage and wayfinding; spaces for eating, interaction and leisure pursuits; and gardens. Throughout, emphasis is placed on the importance of creating a sense of 'home', and of taking the complex sensory, physical and emotional needs of individuals at the various stages of dementia into account. The practical design recommendations are amply illustrated with other 100 photographs, some in colour, and the book closes with a useful photocopiable design checklist which can be used to assess and prioritise the design changes needed in a particular care environment.
This research-based book offers a wealth of ideas for improving care environments for people with dementia through design, and is essential reading for care home staff and managers, occupational therapists and other professionals, relatives and other carers, as well as designers and architects.
