The past decade has witnessed important advances in cardiac MRI, and it now plays a major role in the diagnosis and prognostic assessment of ischemic heart disease. Its most important advantage is the ability, within a single examination, to integrate information on anatomy, tissue characteristics, wall motion, and myocardial perfusion. This is the first book on cardiac MRI to be devoted exclusively to ischemic heart disease. Both clinical applications and research developments are described in detail. The value of MRI is considered in a number of settings, including detection of ischemia, assessment of acute and chronic myocardial infarction, prediction of myocardial viability, evaluation of coronary arteries, and vessel wall imaging. Each chapter includes scan protocols and helpful tables of key imaging features. Careful attention is paid to newer MRI options for the evaluation of ischemic heart disease, including the latest diffusion and T2*-weighted imaging techniques. This up-to-date and well-illustrated book will be invaluable for radiologists, cardiologists, and internal medicine specialists.
Luigi Natale, MD, is currently Head of the MRI Department at Centro Oncologico, Florence, having previously been Head of the MRI Unit at the Catholic University of Rome since 2003. Dr. Natale gained his medical degree in 1985 and, after achieving board certification in radiology, became first a Fellow and then Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart School of Medicine, Rome. His particular fields of interest included CT and MRI, and he developed the latter interest through various overseas courses and visits. Dr. Natale is a member of the Educational Committee of the European Society of Cardiac Imaging. He is also a Past President of the Cardiac Radiology Working Group of the Italian Society of Cardiac Radiology and an active current member of the thoracic imaging and cardiac imaging groups of the Italian Society of Medical Radiology and the Italian Society of Cardiology. He has published some 60 papers in indexed journals and has also authored several book chapters. He has been a speaker at many national and international congresses, workshops, and courses, mainly in cardiac imaging, and cardiac MRI is among his foremost research interests.
