This video shows how to perform a mental status examination by observing the patient's level of consciousness and general appearance. Also included are techniques for testing the 12 pairs of cranial nerves to assess the function of the corticospinal tract, extrapyramidal tract, and the cerebellum. Techniques are shown for assessing position sense and coordination, muscle strength, and involuntary muscle movements. Viewers learn how to test deep tendon and superficial reflexes, and how to assess spinothalamic tract and posterior column of the spinal cord by testing pain, temperature, crude touch, position, vibration, and fine touch.
