This book helps student nurses to understand and develop their role as leaders, managers and team workers in a changing and challenging health care environment.
Leadership, management and team working have become central to the role of the nurse, as recognised in the latest NMC standards for education. This book assists students in meeting the NMC requirements, and helps them apply recent leadership and management theory to the nurse′s role. It explores students′ current perceptions and concerns, giving practical guidance for immediate challenges the new nurse will face: team working, delegation, conflict management and negotiation. It then considers staff development and motivation, mentoring, supervising and creating a learning environment. Later chapters explore more complex aspects such as management theory, recruitment, risk management and managing change.

Professor Shirley Bach is Head of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Brighton with responsibility for a wide range of health professional education.  Previously she was head of post-graduate studies and has developed curriculum for undergraduate and pre-registration courses in a variety of subject domains. Nursing experience outside of the UK, in acute care settings and in primary care has given her a rich background from which to draw on in supporting the curricular of future nursing courses. In the past, she has specialised in health psychology and the application of psychology to health and illness settings. Recently, she has promoted the development of caring sciences from a European perspective. Since 2008 she has been lead professional editor for the Transforming Nursing Practice series.   Peter Ellis is an independent nursing and health and social care writer and consultant, and CEO of Intelligent Care Software. He is also an Expert Witness for nursing and social care. Peter was most recently a Registered Manager and Nursing Director in the Hospice and social care settings.
