With contributions by numerous experts

The development of fast scanning techniques and ultrahigh temporal resolution, which can be employed for both ECG-gated and nongated examinations of the chest, has made integrated cardiothoracic imaging a reality. This timely, well-illustrated book, written by recognized experts in the field, addresses the potential value of such imaging. The first and second parts discuss the technological background and the cardiac and coronary artery anatomy and physiology, while the third part examines heart-lung physiological and therapeutic interactions. The fourth part, which forms the main body of the book, examines in detail the various clinical applications of integrated cardiothoracic imaging, including cardiac complications of thoracic disorders, thoracic consequences of cardiac diseases, ambiguous symptomatology such as chest pain and hemoptysis, asymptomatic cardiac diseases, pericardial disease, and lung perfusion evaluation. A principal aim of the book is to demonstrate that general radiologists can participate in screening for cardiac and coronary artery lesions in at-risk populations scanned owing to respiratory symptoms.

Technological Approach to Cardiothoracic Imaging.- From Sixteen Slices to Nowadays - Cardiothoracic Imaging with CT.- Cardiac Gating.- Cardiothoracic Image Postprocessing.- Contrast Medium Utilization.- Dose Reduction in Chest CT.- Acquisition Protocols.- Anatomical and Physiological Approach to Cardiothoracic Imaging.- Cardiac and Coronary Artery Anatomy and Physiology.- Heart-Lung Interactions.- Physiological Interactions.- Drug-Induced Respiratory Disease in Cardiac Patients.- Medical Applications of Integrated Cardiothoracic Imaging.- Diseases of the Pulmonary Circulation.- COPD and Cardiac Comorbidities.- Immunologic Lung Disease.- Sleep-Related Hypoventilation/Hypoxemic Syndromes (SRHH).- Imaging Findings Associated with Left-Sided Cardiac Dysfunction.- Evaluation of Chest Pain, Hemoptysis and Dyspnea.- Lesions of Proximal Coronary Arteries.- Myocardial Infarction.- Aortic Bicuspidia, Silent Ductus Arteriosus.- Cardiac Calcifications.- Left Superior Vena Cava.- Partial Anomalous Venous Return.- Pulmonary Valvular Stenosis.- Right-to-Left Shunts.- MDCT: Evaluation of Congenital and Acquired Diseases of the Pericardium.- Lung Perfusion.- Pulmonary Embolism from Cardiac Origin.- Pectus Excavatum and the Heart.- Thoracic Surgery and Asymptomatic Coronary Artery Disease.- Diseases Developing Coronaro-Bronchial Anastomoses.

From the reviews:

"In this ... text, the authors take a comprehensive look at the 'development of fast scanning techniques' as a means to examine the chest for abnormality and disease. ... which speaks to clinician, radiologist and researcher with equal dexterity." (The Electric Review, May, 2009)

"This outstanding book explores another frontier of MDCT imaging, especially the widespread application of this radiological technique in the screening for cardiac and coronary artery lesions in at-risk patients who undergo MDCT due to respiratory symptoms. For both general and chest radiologists the book is of high importance. ... In general, the book has managed to fill a gap especially for the clinical evaluation of clinical questions in the integrated cardiothoracic imaging approach. We wish the book all the success it deserves." (Th. J. Vogl, European Radiology, Vol. 21, 2011)
