A description of what is known about the role of reduced levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in diseases of old age. It examines the role of DHEA in modulation of fat and muscle, bone damage, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, cancer, fertility and sexuality.
The major hormone produced by the adrenal gland is dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). The production of this hormone declines with age. The goal of this study is to describe what is known about the role of reduced levels of DHEA in diseases of old age. The research agenda of the US National Institute of Aging is looked at, bringing into focus the areas where information is still scarce. Following this, experts have reviewed and analyzed information on the role of DHEA in modulation of fat and muscle, bone damage, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, cancer, fertility and sexuality. In addition, the role of DHEA in children's growth and development is appraised, and there is a discussion on chemical analogues, which may have special activities.

DHEA biosynthesis and role in energy: the biosynthesis of DHEA by the adrenal cortex and its age-related decline; antiobesity effect of dehydroepiandrosterone treatment in animals; dehydroepiandrosterone and ergosteroids affect energy expenditure; modulation of muscle and fat mass by DHEA. DHEA and age: dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and ageing - a research agenda; dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and Alzheimer's disease; prevention of heart disease in the elderly by DHEA; osteoporosis and bone metabolism. DHEA in growth: DHEA in children's growth and development; DHEA - fertility and sexuality. Immunology - cancer, AIDS and ageing: DHEA in immune modulation and ageing; DHEA in cell growth and carcinogenesis - Farnesyl transferase; DHEA and AIDS; DHEA analogues and cancer; dehydroepiandrosterone in heart transplant patients.
