This practical textbook has been written specifically for midwives either training of working in the tropics. It deals with obstetric conditions peculiar to the tropical zone, emphasizing important complications of pregnancy and labour. It also furnishes the midwife with an understanding of the environment in which she has to work. The book is well illustrated and written in clear, simple English. For this second edition, the text has been thoroughly revised to cover recent advances in midwifery. Many topics have been expanded, including preterm labour, intrauterine growth retardation, risk approach in obsterics, respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn and family planning. Others, for example pregnancy tests, have been updated. Material has been added on chronic nephritis and thyroid disease.
