The first comprehensive book dealing with nano-sized metal-based materials in health care, including diagnostics, therapeutics and preventive applications.
This new book covers the latest research in the fast emerging area of nano-biotechnology for health care and provides the historical and future perspective on the subject. It is the first comprehensive book dedicated to metal based nanophases, dealing with their biosynthesis and biomedical applications including diagnostics, therapeutics and preventive applications. The emphasis is on the new bio-synthetic methodologies for preparing metal (gold, silver etc.) and semiconductor (metal sulphides) nano particles and their characterization. A detailed account of the chronological evolution of metal-based nanomaterials and metallo-pharmaceuticals in nano-size range used in alternative medicines is one of the unique features of this work. The book is also the first comprehensive account of the traditional use of metal based nanophases in alternative and traditional medical systems, still practiced in India and China. A detailed discussion and analysis of the latest research on the application of nano-phases in cancer therapy and other diseases including mechanistic aspects is also included.
Indian author, Dr Rajiv Kumar, has been working on developing novel chemical- and bio-synthetic protocols and understanding the synthesis mechanism of nano-particles including his interest in the characterization of alternative medicines (like traditional Indian, Unani and Chinese metal based alternative medicines) using modern scientific tools. Dr Mukherjee has been engaged for the last several years on the application of metal based nanoparticles (mainly gold) for cancer treatment and imaging up to pre-clinical stage with a focus on both the mechanistic and practical aspects.

Dr Priyabrata Mukherjee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. He received his PhD from the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, India on heterogeneous catalysis and he received his post-doctoral experience in the Department of Chemistry, TCU and in the Department of Surgery and Cellular Therapeutics, Children's Hospital, Harvard University. His research focus includes materials science, drug delivery, cancer nanotechnology, anti-angiogenesis and stem cells in cancer. Dr Rajiv Kumar, after obtaining his PhD in Chemistry from Agra University, Agra, India, joined the Inorganic and Catalysis Division, National Chemicals Laboratory, Pune, India. After that, he visited Germany under the DAAD and Alexander von Humboldt fellowship programmes. He has about 30 years of active research in the area of synthesis, characterization and the catalytic applications of nanoporous materials. Presently, he is Head of Green Chemistry and Catalysis Division at the Innovation Center of Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) in Pune, India. The main areas of his activity at NCL as well as TCL include synthesis and applications of nanoporous materials and nano-phases and composites in various organic transformations as selective catalysts, catalyst support and adsorbants. He is also heavily involved in the biosynthesis of metal, and metal oxide nanomaterials as well as the structural characterization of ayurvedic metal based formulations commonly known as "Bhasmas".

General introduction, tracing the history of the applications of nano-phases in health care; Synthetic methodologies for inorganic nano particles / nanophases and biosynthesis of metal based nanoparticles/nanophases; Therapeutic application of metal nanoparticles; .
