A comprehensive guide to all aspects of renal transplantation, this handbook follows the admission of a renal failure patient, covering eligibility for transplant, guidelines for the transplant process and potential complications. It includes comprehensive background information, including immunology, tissue typing and donor management.
Renal Transplantation has been written for use by trainees, doctors and nurses who are exposed to renal transplant patients and their donors. It is a practical, comprehensive guide to all aspects of renal transplantation. Every phase of donor and recipient care, from assessment to the transplant operation to post-transplant management, is included, with chapters covering essential background information and up-to-date management guidelines. Additional chapters include information on transplant immunology, tissue typing, immunosuppression and antibody incompatible transplantation. There are also chapters devoted to the most recent developments, particularly the increasing number of transplants from living donors, and strategies to perform 'high risk' transplants.

After clinical training in nephrology and transplantation in Cambridge, Nicholas Torpey spent three years at Yale University funded by a KRUK fellowship to study the vascular biology of transplantation. He has been a consultant nephrologist in Newcastle since 2004. Nadeem Moghal has been a consultant paediatric nephrologist at the Royal Victoria Infirmary since 1998, becoming head of the department in 2003. His work covers all aspects of secondary and tertiary renal disease management, including support to other services such as neonatology, oncology and intensive care. Evelyn Watson became a registered general nurse in 1995, since when she has specialised in renal nursing. In addition to being sister on the Regional Transplant Unit she has been involved as a research nurse for clinical trials involving immunosuppressant. She regularly lectures on nephrology, transplantation and pharmakinetics to post registered nurses at degree level at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. David Talbot has been a transplant surgeon in Newcastle since 1995 having trained in the North East of England and Birmingham. His early research interests were antibody detection using flow cytometry and later non heart beating donation. His current clinical practice includes access surgery, renal and liver transplantation, live donor and paediatric renal transplantation.
