Hip arthroscopy is an evolving science that has made exponential strides in the past several years due to improved surgical instruments and techniques. Interest in hip arthroscopy continues to grow, yet arthroscopy of the hip continues to be an extremely challenging procedure for the beginning arthroscopist. The challenge is due to both the constrained joint anatomy that necessitates using a 70 scope and the traction that is required for scoping the central compartment. This limits the hip arthroscopists surgical time leading to stress and potential errors by the young surgeon. In this video, Dr. Martin covers all of the common surgical procedures currently performed by hip arthroscopists from portal placement, management of labral tears (including labral repair), and treatment for femoral acetabular impingement. The program includes some of the more common pitfalls that can occur during hip arthroscopy and how to avoid them. For example, surgical decisions and rationale are presented for labral repair versus labral debridement. The video is interactive and layered to simulate the three-dimensional anatomy encountered during hip arthroscopy, so the surgeon understands the proper orientation, which can be lost when operating with a 70 scope in the close confines of the hip joint.
