The use of a Prosthesis of Antibiotic-Loaded Acrylic Cement, known as a PROSTALAC[registered] device, offers significant advantages. The PROSTALAC[registered] hip is designed to function temporarily as a total hip prosthesis. This title discusses the rationale of a PROTALAC[registered] device and the surgical technique involved in using it.
This title focuses on such areas as: joint replacement and hip, knee and lower extremity. The gold standard treatment of chronically infected total hip arthroplasties is a two-stage reconstruction with a thorough debridement, long-term antibiotics, and reimplantation when the infection is eradicated. Using cement spacers has been advocated to deliver high doses of antibiotics directly to the site of infection and to help maintain soft tissue tension and patient function until reimplantation. The use of a Prosthesis of Antibiotic-Loaded Acrylic Cement, known as a PROSTALAC[registered] device, offers significant advantages. The PROSTALAC[registered] hip is designed to function temporarily as a total hip prosthesis, allowing limited patient mobility following excision arthroplasty surgery. In this video, Dr. Hamilton discusses the rationale of a PROTALAC[registered] device and demonstrates the surgical technique involved in using it.
