Halftoning is an essential step in the process of printing and in displaying images on limited bit-depth devices. Processing these images involves different challenges from those of continuous tone images. This book covers advances in the processing of halftone images.
Halftoning is an essential step in the process of printing and in displaying images on limited bit-depth devices. Processing these images involves different challenges from those of continuous tone images. "Image Processing and Halftones" covers the latest advances in the processing of halftone images. The book begins with an introduction to essential signal processing techniques and most the commonly used halftoning algorithms. Several important areas of halftone image processing are considered in detail: inverse halftoning; compression; watermarking; and data hiding. The reader can gain a detailed and comprehensive view of the state-of-the-art techniques in halftoning and an understanding of their increasing application in secure printing, scanning, fax, image pipelines, and image transmission. "Image Processing and Halftones" includes worked examples throughout the text, allowing the book to be used as a introduction to image processing for halftones by advanced students.

Dr Ping Wah Wong is a consultant specializing in image processing, digital halftoning, image watermarking, data compression, audio coding and security technologies. He received a PhD from Stanford University in Electrical Engineering. Ping has taught college level courses at Clarkson University, California State University at Hayward, and tutorial courses at professional conferences. Ping's professional interest is in image processing, signal processing, data compression, and security technologies. In 1999, Ping co-founded the SPIE Annual Conference on Security and Watermarking of Multimedia Contents. Ping served as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. He is Associate Editor of Journal of Electronic Imaging. Dr Nasir Memon is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Polytechnic University, New York. He received his B.E. in Chemical Engineering and M.Sc. in Mathematics from the Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani, India and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Nebraska, in Computer Science. He has published more than 150 articles in journals and conference proceedings. He was an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing from 1999 to 2002 and is currently an associate editor for the ACM Multimedia Systems Journal and the Journal of Electronic Imaging. He received the Jacobs Excellence in Education award in 2002. Both authors are well-known in image processing, having published many papers and contributed chapters to handbooks. Gaurav Sharma is an Associate Professor at the University of Rochester in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department. His research interests include: color and digital imaging, multi-media security, and bio-informatics. He received the BE degree in electronics and communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 1990; the ME degree in electrical communication engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1992; and the MS degree in applied mathematics and PhD degree in electrical and computer engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh in 1995 and 1996 respectively. He currently serves as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, the IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, and the Journal of Electronic Imaging.
