Zwischen den 1940er- und den 1990er-Jahren stellten in der Schweiz drei Nordwestschweizer Unternehmen Schrifttypen für Schreibmaschinen her: Caractères SA, Setag und Novatype. Während mehr als fünfzig Jahren belieferten sie die grössten Hersteller von Büromaschinen in Europa und auf der ganzen Welt, wie IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès oder Triumph-Adler.

Die drei Hersteller, die weltweit eine führende Position innehatten, spielten eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Gestaltung, Entwicklung und Herstellung von Schriftkomponenten und Schriften für Schreibmaschinen sowie für alle Arten von Anschlagdruckern.

Die unverwechselbare Ästhetik von Schreibmaschinenschriften spielt in der heutigen typografischen Szene eine bedeutende Rolle. Diese Publikation bietet eine eingehende Untersuchung des historischen und technologischen Kontextes von Schreibmaschinenschriften. Anhand der detaillierten Porträts von Caractères SA, Setag und Novatype wird ein besseres Verständnis für die globale Schriftindustrie vermittelt. Dieser reich bebilderte Band erforscht eine Design- und Industriegeschichte anhand von Archivrecherchen und Interviews.

Als die drei Schweizer Unternehmen in den 1990er-Jahren geschlossen wurden, sind die meisten ihrer Archive vernichtet worden. Daher wandelte sich diese Recherche schnell zu einer sehr präzisen Untersuchung, um diesen Abschnitt der Geschichte anhand von Primärquellen zu dokumentieren.

Dieses Buch, das die in jahrelanger Recherche an zahlreichen Orten gesammelten Dokumente und Informationen zusammenführt, enthält unveröffentlichtes Bildmaterial und beleuchtet einen wenig bekannten Teil der industriellen und typografischen Geschichte auf lokaler und internationaler Ebene.

Between the 1940s and the 1990s, three north-western Swiss companies manufactured type for typewriters in Switzerland: Caractères SA, Setag, and Novatype. For more than fifty years, they supplied the largest producers of office machines in Europe and around the world, such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès, and Triumph-Adler.

The three manufacturers, who held a leading position worldwide, played an essential role in the design,  development, and production of type component and typefaces for typewriters as well as for all sorts of impact printers.
The distinctive aesthetic of typewriter fonts has had a significant impact that continues to be felt in today’s typography. This publication examines the historical and technological context of typewriter typefaces in detail, along with portraits of Caractères SA, Setag, and Novatype for a better understanding of the global type industry. Rich illustrations accompany the archival research and interviews that outline a history of design and industry.

When the three Swiss companies closed in the 1990s, most of their archives were destroyed. Therefore, this research quickly turned into a very precise investigation to document this period of history using primary sources. Bringing together documents and information collected over several years of research in numerous locations, this book contains unpublished images and illuminates a little-known chapter of industrial and typographic history on a national and international level.

Entre les années 1940 et 1990, trois entreprises suisses ont fabriqué des caractères pour machines à écrire dans le nord-ouest de la Suisse: Caractères SA, Setag et Novatype. Pendant plus de cinquante ans, elles ont fourni les producteurs de machines de bureau les plus importants en Europe et dans le monde, tels que IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès et Triumph-Adler.

Ces trois fabricants, qui occupaient une position dominante sur le marché mondial, ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la création, le développement et la fabrication de caractères et d’écritures pour machines à écrire, ainsi que pour tous types d’imprimantes à impact.

L’esthétique caractéristique des écritures pour machines à écrire occupe une place non négligeable sur la scène typographique actuelle. Par les portraits détaillés de Caractères SA, Setag et Novatype, cette publication propose une étude approfondie du contexte historique et technologique inhérent à ces écritures et permet de mieux comprendre l’industrie mondiale des caractères à impact. Richement illustré, l’ouvrage explore une histoire du design et de l’industrie à travers un vaste travail de recherches d’archives et d’interviews.

Quand les trois entreprises suisses ont fermé dans les années 1990, la plupart de leurs archives ont été détruites. C’est pourquoi cette recherche s’est rapidement transformée en une enquête très détaillée, visant à documenter cette période de l’histoire à l’aide de sources primaires. 

Ce livre, qui rassemble des documents et des informations collectées sur plusieurs années dans une multitude de lieux, contient des images inédites et met en lumière un pan peu connu de l’histoire industrielle et typographique, tant au niveau local et qu’international.
