The purpose of this workshop was to provide a general forum for distributed systems researchers. Special em- phasis was placed on research activities in distributed operating systems and management of distributed sys- stems. This volume includes a selection of the papers presented at the workshop. They focus on the illustration of existing concepts and solutions in distributed systems research and development, exemplified by case study analyses of various projects. The annex contains the position papers prepared for the panel discussions at the workshop.

The evolution of a distributed operating system.- AIL-a class-oriented RPC stub generator for Amoeba.- Peace - A distributed operating system for high-performance multicomputer systems.- Virtual memory management in Chorus.- Is object orientation a good thing for distributed systems?.- Experiences with a portable network operating system.- On the implementation of abstract data types in BirliX.- Monitoring and management-support of distributed systems.- DAPHNE support for distributed computing in heterogeneous environments.- Distributed computing with a processor bank.- MANDIS: Management of distributed systems.- OAI - concepts for open systems cooperation.- Position paper for the workshop "progress in distributed operating systems and distributed systems management" - a European update -.- Position paper.- Keep things as simple as possible.- Research directions for distributed operating systems.- Position paper for panel discussion.- Key research directions in distributed operating systems.- Position statement for the panel discussion.- Position statements on "distributed operating systems".- Some unsolved problems of distributed system management, as seen from project Athena.- Extending distributed operating systems to manageable large scale distributed processing environments.- Future collaborative research in Europe.- Progress in distributed operating systems and distributed systems management.
