The Water-Energy-Food Nexus: Optimization Models for Decision Making, Volume 32 covers water, energy, and food as crucial resources for human well-being and sustainable development. These resources are inextricably interrelated, therefore, to cover water, energy, and food demands in different sectors and at different scales, it must be considered several sources to produce resources, and the interlinkages of resources for a proper integration must be considered. This book emphasizes issues that must be considered in the design of water-energy-food nexus systems, such as the selection of technologies to produce water or energy, size of technologies, and food required for nutritional demands. In addition, mathematical models are presented for the design of water-energy-food nexus systems involving several strategies to account for issues such as sustainable development, security of resources, interest in conflicts from stakeholders, and efficient allocation of resources.

M.C. Brenda Cansino-Loeza received her master’s degree in the Chemical Engineering Department in the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo in Mexico in 2019. She stayed as a scholar researcher at Texas A&M University Currently, she is PhD Student at the Chemical Engineering Department in the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo in Mexico. Her research interest is in optimization of water-energy-food nexus systems for the improvement of Sustainable Development Goals. She has published 11 papers and three book chapters. José María Ponce-Ortega is a full Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department, Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Mexico. He obtained his Ph.D. and Master degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Institute of Technology of Celaya (Mexico). He previously held posts as a postdoctoral researcher at Texas A&M University, USA, and as a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University, USA. Prof. Ponce-Ortega has published over 300 papers, 4 books, and 50 book chapters. He has also supervised 25 Ph.D. and 40 Master students, and has worked on 15 funded research projects totaling approximately $US 1,000,000.00. He is a member of the editorial boards of Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy and Process Integration and Optimization for Sustainability, and a subject editor for the Sustainable Production and Consumption journal, as well as a member of the National Research System of Mexico. Prof. Ponce-Ortega’s research is in the areas of optimization of chemical processes, sustainable design, energy, mass, water and property integration, and supply chain optimization.
