The essays in this volume report on the directions in which control disciplines might evolve. Most of these were presented as plenary lectures at the colloqium, Perspectives in Control, held in Paris in June 1998, and organized by the GdR-Automatique to mark the occasion of the 60th birthday of its founder, Ioan Dori Landau. The essays include methodological contributions, overview tutorials and philosophical reflections.
