A Journey through the History of Numerical Linear Algebra
Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics,U.S. (Verlag)
978-1-61197-722-6 (ISBN)
This expansive volume describes the history of numerical methods proposed to solve linear algebra problems,, from antiquity to the present day. The authors focus on methods for solving linear systems of equations and eigenvalue problems and describe the interplay between numerical methods and the computing tools available at the time. The second part of the book consists of 78 biographies of the main important contributors to the field.
A Journey through the History of Numerical Linear Algebra will be of special interest to applied mathematicians, especially researchers in numerical linear algebra, and to applied mathematiciansas well as to and historians of mathematics as well.
Claude Brezinski is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Lille, France, where he was head of the Laboratory of Numerical Analysis and Optimization for 30 years and advised 60 doctoral students. Professor BrezinskiHe is the founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Numerical Algorithms and author of more than 240 papers and several books on applied mathematics as well as the history of science. Gérard Meurant is retired from the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), where he worked in applied mathematics from 1970 to 2008. He and was research director at the time of his retirement. He is the author of more than 60 papers on numerical linear algebra and five books, including two booksof them co-authored with Gene H. Golub. Michela Redivo-Zaglia is professor of numerical analysis at the University of Padua, Italy, where she was vice director of the department of mathematics for three years. She is a member of the editorial board of several journals and has published eight books, more than 85 papers, and several software packages. Professor Redivo-ZagliaShe has organized and been a plenary or invited speaker at many international conferences.
