The proceedings include a number of invited tutorial papers on subjects of general interest in nonlinear dynamics, as well as contributed papers on recent developments in nonlinear optical systems. Among the areas of emphasis is the formation of complex spatial configurations and the mechanism of pattern selection in nonlinear systems. Invited speakers on these topics include Hermann Haken (Univ. Stuttgart), Michael Berry (Univ. Bristol), Pierre Coullet (Univ. Nice) and Mikhail Rabinovich (Nizhny Novgorod). Several international groups presented their latest results on optical defects, spatio-temporal chaos, and static and dynamic pattern formation in lasers and photo-refractive media. The application of these phenomena to pattern recognition and associative memory is a subject of great interest.

Dynamics of pulse formation, W.J. Firth; fast and slow self-phase modulation-induced pulse shaping of subpicosecond pulses in semiconductor laser amplifiers, A. Dienes, et al; chaos and multistability in a bimodal CO2 laser with a saturable absorber, K. Tanii, et al; pulse train instabilities and pulse structure evolution in a Nd-YAG laser with active mode-locking, L. A. Melnikov and G.N. Tatarkov; controlling chaos, G. Grebogi; dynamics of passive FM locking in semiconductor lasers, K.A. Shore and W.M. Yee; patterns and their defects, P. Coullet; interference and dislocation patterns in linear waves, M. Berry; pattern formation, pattern recognition and associative memory, H. Haken; network of chaotic elements, K. Kaneko; spatial correlation dimension and critical phenomena in complex ginzburg-lardau model, M. Rabinovich. (Part contents).
