Es ist schön zu sehen, dass immer mehr Menschen verstehen, wie wichtig Typografie ist. Die Wahl einer Schrift und die Gestaltung eines Textes können einen dramatischen Einfluss auf seine Bedeutung haben. Schriften brauchen keine Worte, um eine Botschaft zu vermitteln. Die Verantwortung für Grafikdesigner bei der Wahl der richtigen Schrift ist daher entscheidend. Doch wie findet man die richtige Schrift in dem unendlichen Universum der Möglichkeiten? Das Yearbook of Type 2021/22 macht es leicht, sich einen Überblick über kürzlich veröffentlichte Schriften aus aller Welt zu verschaffen und gleichzeitig ihre visuelle Sprache zu verstehen.

Jede Schrift wird auf einer Doppelseite vorgestellt. Auf der linken Seite gibt eine Schriftprobe eine Idee der möglichen Anwendung und präsentiert die Schönheit und den einzigartigen Charakter jeder Schrift. Das diesjährige Thema ist Musik. Denn so wie Musik durch Melodien und Texte Emotionen vermittelt, tut dies die Typografie durch ihre Form und die Ausgewogenheit der Buchstaben. Auf der rechten Seite finden sich detaillierte Informationen zu den Designern und Schriftenverlagen sowie den spezifischen Eigenschaften der Schriften.

Ergänzt wird das Yearbook of Type durch eine Reihe von Essays, die Hintergrundinformationen zur Typografie, zur Geschichte, zu technischen Details und Anleitungen sowie zu den neuesten Trends im aktuellen Schriftdesign bieten. Ein Index sortiert die Schriften nach Klassifikation und listet Designer, Schriftenverlage und OpenType-Features auf. Zu guter Letzt präsentiert eine Online-Microsite alle vorgestellten Schriften, so dass der Nutzer sie testen oder kaufen kann.

The choice of a typeface and the design of a text can have a dramatic impact on its meaning. Typefaces don’t need words to convey a message. The responsibility for graphic designers in choosing the right typeface is therefore crucial. But how do you find the right typeface in the infinite universe of possibilities? The Yearbook of Type 2021/22 makes it easy to get an overview of recently published typefaces from around the world while understanding their visual language.

Each typeface is presented on a double-page spread. On the left side, a specimen gives an idea of possible applications and shows the beauty and character of each typeface. This year’s theme is music. As music conveys emotions through melodies and lyrics, typography does so through its form and balance of letters. The right page provides detailed information about the designers and foundries, as well as an overview of the typefaces’ features.

The Yearbook of Type is complemented by a series of essays that offer background information about typography, history, technical details and how-to guides, and the latest trends in current type design. An index sorts typefaces by classifications, besides listing designers, foundries, and OpenType features. Last but not least, an online microsite presents all featured fonts, so that users can test or purchase them.
