This book provides a solid empirical portrait based on the complexities of demographic components of population change. It describes recent innovations, trends, challenges and solutions to population change and public policy issues, such as but not limited to immigration, gender discrimination in the labor market, student housing, teen pregnancy programs, smoking and alcohol consumption, and environment and self-rated health. As such it provides an interesting platform for academics, researchers, policy makers, and students to explore experiences and research findings on special topics in applied demography and how those inform the field of population studies and public policy.



Billystrom Jivetti (Ph.D.) is a Research Scientist III at the Center for Geospatial and Population Studies at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, USA. He conducts demographic studies using census data, and designs projects that require application of geospatial techniques in solving social problems related to poverty, education, climate change, human dimensions of biodiversity conservation, and rural health interventions among others. He also applies quantitative techniques to demographic research to inform policy analysis and economic development in international development. He earned his doctorate in Rural Sociology with specialties in rural and international development from the University of Missouri. He also attended the Universities of Oklahoma State University where he pursued graduate programs in international studies and Miami University of Ohio for environmental management. He is a native of Western Kenya.

 

Nazrul Hoque (Ph.D.) is a Senior Research Scientist at The Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston, Texas, USA. He is an applied demographer whose research interests are in the areas of population estimates and projections, fertility, mortality, migration, and aging. He is particularly interested in examining the impact of future demographic changes on different types of public services and policy issues. His research has been published in the journals of Population Research and Policy Review, Canadian Studies in Population, Canadian Journal on Aging, Spatial Economic Analysis, Rural Sociology, Social Biology, World Journal of Aids, Demography India, Journal of Leisure Research, Leisure Science, Japanese Journal of Infectious Diseases, African Health Sciences, and few more. He has co-authored two books published by Texas A&M University and co-edited four books published by Springer in his areas of expertise. Dr. Hoque received M.A.s from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and the University of Waterloo, Canada and a dual-title Ph.D. in Sociology and Demography from The Pennsylvania State University, Pennsylvania, USA. He is a Fulbright scholar who was awarded a teaching and research grant to offer courses in Applied Demography at the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Institute for Mathematical Research at the Universiti Putra, Malaysia.
