This book gathers extended versions of papers presented at DoSIER 2019 (the First Doctoral Symposium on Intelligence Enabled Research, organized by RCC Institute of Information Technology, Kolkata, India). The papers address the rapidly expanding research area of computational intelligence, which, no longer limited to specific computational fields, has since made inroads in signal processing, smart manufacturing, predictive control, robot navigation, smart cities, and sensor design, to name but a few. Presenting chapters written by experts active in these areas, the book offers a valuable reference guide for researchers and industrial practitioners alike, and will inspire future studies.

Dr. Siddhartha Bhattacharyya is currently the Principal of RCC Institute of Information Technology, Kolkata, India. He served as a Senior Research Scientist at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of VSB Technical University of Ostrava, Czech Republic, from October 2018 to April 2019. Prior to this, he was the Professor of Information Technology at RCC Institute of Information Technology, Kolkata, India. He is a co-author of 5 books and co-editor of 30 books, and has more than 220 research publications in international journals and conference proceedings to his credit. His research interests include soft computing, pattern recognition, multimedia data processing, hybrid intelligence, and quantum computing.

Dr. Sushmita Mitra is the Head of and INAE Chair Professor at the Machine Intelligence Unit (MIU), Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. From 1992 to 1994, she was a DAAD Fellow at the RWTH in Aachen, Germany. She was a Visiting Professor at the Computer Science Department of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, in 2004 and 2007; Meiji University, Japan, in 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2007; and Aalborg University Esbjerg, Denmark, in 2002 and 2003. She has more than 150 research publications in refereed international journals to her credit.

According to the Science Citation Index (SCI), two of her papers have been ranked 3rd and 15th in the list of top-cited papers in Engineering Science from India during 1992-2001. Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), and National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). She was an IEEE CIS Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2014-2016. Dr. Mitra is the current Chair of the IEEE CIS Kolkata Chapter. Her current research interests include data mining, pattern recognition, soft computing, medical image processing, and bioinformatics.

Dr. Paramartha Dutta received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, in 1988 and 1990, respectively. He completed his Master of Technology in Computer Science at the same institute in 1993, and his Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering at Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, in 2005. He has served on various projects funded by the Government of India, e.g. for the Defence Research and Development Organization, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, etc. Dr. Dutta is currently a Professor at the Department of Computer and System Sciences, Visva Bharati University, West Bengal, India. He has co-authored four books and has one edited book to his credit. He has published ca. 100 papers in various journals and conference proceedings, both national and international.
