Implement reactive programming using Kotlin to build high-performance, asynchronous, and reliable applications
About This Book
* Understand reactive programming and write reactive web applications with Spring Boot, Hibernate, and JPA
* Create robust, distributed, and scalable applications using the reactive programming paradigm
* Build scalable reactive apps with reduced complexity
Who This Book Is For
This book is for Kotlin developers who would like to build fault-tolerant, scalable, and distributed systems. Though no prior knowledge of reactive programming is expected, basic knowledge of Kotlin will help you understand the concepts covered.
What You Will Learn
* Get to grips with making UI events block free
* Build reactive architectures to reduce architectural complexity
* Uncover the benefits of using reactive programming for building applications
* Understand the importance of making UI events reactive and how to achieve it
* Use RxJava/RxKotlin for performing reactive programming
* Leverage reactive programming on the web
In Detail
Reactive Programming is a powerful way to create asynchronous and event-based applications. It enables you to build message-driven, elastic, resilient, and responsive services. Complete with real-world examples, this book will help you learn how to write block-free reactive code.
Hands-On Reactive Programming with Kotlin starts with a detailed introduction to reactive programming and explains why reactive programming is better for mobile application development. You'll implement a real-time Android application and delve into core concepts such as operators and schedulers to make your application perform concurrent operations. You'll learn how to make your user interface reactive with the RxBinding library and get to grips with the switching, windowing, buffering, and throttling operators to achieve concurrency between observables and subscribers. In addition to this, you'll get to grips with the concepts of error handling and debugging and understand testing in reactive programming. In the final chapters, you'll delve into REST architecture, REST API, and Reactive microservices, among other advanced concepts, to create your own web services.
By the end of this book, you will have developed the skill to build applications with reactive user interfaces and architectures confidently.

Abid Khan is an application developer and test engineer with over 10 years of experience. He has worked with different programming languages, including C/C++ and Java, and is now working with Kotlin as a primary language for Android development. Abid is also the author of a book, Hands-On Object-Oriented Programming in Kotlin. He lives in Stockholm, Sweden, and spends most of his time reading books, learning new technologies, and blogging. Aanand Shekhar Roy is an Android developer working for Joist in Toronto, Canada. His mobile engineering career includes working for various startups and companies, such as U.S.-based startups Consciously.Life, PushCoin, and NextFan-FantasyIndyCar. He is also a mentor for the Associate Android Developer Fast Track program by Google on Udacity and mentors a team of 20 software developers. Juan Antonio Medina Iglesias began his career 20 years ago as an indie game developer and worked abroad four countries since then, from embedded software to enterprise applications. He has a lifetime's dedication to software craftsmanship. Since 2006, he works at Santander Technology with a talented group of professionals who performed one of the biggest transformations in the banking industry.
