CADCAM technology has made many advances since it was first introduced into the engineering industry. Companies need to know how to make the most effective use of current methods and how to update systems for greater cost effectiveness and design flexibility. The fifth European conference on "Effective CADCAM" held in Coventry in November 1991, and organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, provided an opportunity for engineers to discuss their experience of systems currently available as well as future developments. The range of topics under discussion included profit through design optimization, the CADCAM contribution to customized orthopaedic implants and effective engineering for British Rail's vehicle fleet. This volume contains the papers presented at the conference.

Application of CADCAE to the optomechanical design of optical modules for head-up displays; profit through design optimization; a user's experience of three-dimensional computer modelling for process plants; CAE tools to reduce time to market; an application of three-dimensional CAD to the analysis of internal combustion engine cycles; the selection of CAD with respect to overall manufacturing strategy; the impact of a computer-based tape proving system in enhancing the CADCAM manufacturing process in the aircraft industry; the CADCAM contribution to customized orthopaedic implants; advances in automatic machining of complex 2.5D components; effective engineering support for British Rail's vehicle fleet; improving design to manufacturing performance in a changing market; the application of advanced surface modelling techniques to the manufacture of tooling for ceramic artefacts; effective and flexible communication between dissimilar CADCAM systems; the practical use of IGES for the exchange of CADCAM information between Unigraphis and CADCAM; the role of product models in effective CADCAM; knowledge-based engineering systems in practice; design and implementation of a general purpose knowledge-based gap analysis system with particular reference to the implementation of effective material requirements planning systems; knowledge-based design system for light engineering components; the concept of computer integrated design; increasing competitiveness through simulation in planning and scheduling; the use of a simulation and scheduling system for materials and capacity requirements - in a JIT factory environment; the business perspective.
