This textbook introduces the advanced topics of: (i) wireless communications, (ii) free-space optical (FSO) communications, (iii) indoor optical wireless (IR) communications, and (iv) fiber-optics communications and presents these different types of communication systems in a unified fashion for better practical use. Fundamental concepts, such as propagation principles, modulation formats, channel coding, diversity principles, MIMO signal processing, multicarrier modulation, equalization, adaptive modulation and coding, detection principles, and software defined transmission are first described and then followed up with a detailed look at each particular system. The book is self-contained and structured to provide straightforward guidance to readers looking to capture fundamentals and gain theoretical and practical knowledge about wireless communications, optical communications, and fiber-optics communications, all which can be readily applied in studies, research, and practical applications. The textbook is intended for an upper undergraduate or graduate level course in optical communication. It features problems, an appendix with all background material needed, and homework.

Dr. Djordjevic is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of College of Engineering of University of Arizona, with a joint appointment in the College of Optical Sciences. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, he was with University of the West of England and University of Bristol, Bristol, UK; Tyco Telecommunications, Eatontown, USA; National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece; and State Telecommunication Company Telecom Serbia, Nis, Serbia. His current research interests include optical communications/networks, error control coding, coded modulation, turbo equalization, OFDM applications, quantum information processing, quantum error correction, QKD, and quantum biology. He presently directs the Optical Communications Systems Laboratory (OCSL) within the ECE Department at the University of Arizona and co-directs the Signal Processing and Coding Lab (SPACL). Dr. Djordjevic is an author/co-author of five books: (i) Quantum Biological Information Theory, Springer, Nov. 2015; (ii) Advanced Optical Communication Systems and Networks, Artech House, Jan. 2013; (iii) Quantum Information Processing and Quantum Error Correction: An Engineering Approach, Elsevier/Academic Press, Apr. 2012; (iv) Coding for Optical Channels, Springer, Mar. 2010; and (v) OFDM for Optical Communications, Elsevier/Academic Press, Oct. 2009. Dr. Djordjevic is also an author of over 400 international journal/conference publications and 37 US patents. Dr. Djordjevic serves as an Associate Editor for the following journals: IEEE Communications Letters, Frequenz, and International Journal of Optics. Dr. Djordjevic is an IEEE Senior Member and an OSA Lifetime Member.
