This title teaches readers how to create, compress, and optimise downloadable and streaming audio for the Web, then post clips to your site for peak user experience. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a variety of software utilities and sample digitised songs.
The use of the Internet for transmitting multimedia has increased dramatically, and the pioneering folks at the Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA) played a big part in blazing the way. Today, IUMA hosts pages promoting bands from around the world-providing sample music cuts that you can audition at the click of a button.

Audio on the Web gives you everything you need to add sound to your own Web pages: file formats, techniques for converting files, and advice for optimizing your files for best Web performance. You'll find the latest innovations, including streaming audio formats and Java. The CD-ROM, worth the price of the book by itself, includes the audio utilities featured in the book, time-saving customized scripts for batch conversions, demo sound clips to compare different audio formats, and more.

Jeff Patterson is the President, Founder, and Technical Director of the Internet Underground Music Archive (IUMA). He studied Computer Science at UC Berkeley from 1991 to 1993 and at UC Santa Cruz from 1993 to 1994. While at UC Berkeley he studied at the Center for New Music and Technology (CNMAT), looking for some way to combine his love of music with his knowledge of computers. Since starting IUMA in 1993, he has been named by Newsweek as one of 50 people to watch for the future, by Websight as a "Cyberstar", and has been interviewed about music and the Web by MTV, CNN, NBC News, and many other television stations and publications. Ryan Melcher was the senior multimedia specialist at IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive), where for over three years he integrated all forms of media into pages and sites on the web. Audio is his primary medium medium, having encoded over 10 formats and 1000 audio files. In addition, Ryan contributed to an article published in the MecklerMedia's Web Developer Magazine on incorporating multimedia files in Web sites. He was also largely responsible for keeping IUMA staff and management abreast of the new technologies.
