Until iOS 7, every iOS release had focused on new functionality and technology. The UI has not changed much since it was introduced in June 2007. But with the introduction of iOS 7, Apple has made it clear that it is no longer business as usual.

Not only has the UI dramatically changed, Apple's view of UX has significantly changed as well and is reflected in a new design language. This requires major changes to the look and feel of an application.

To move to iOS 7, developers need to understand not only the new functionality in iOS 7, but also how to use the new functionality to upgrade and create apps based on this new design language.

In Rethinking iOS Apps: Integrating Design and Technology, prolific Wiley author Neal Goldstein builds on the reader's existing understanding and knowledge of iOS and leads the reader through the process of designing an app for the iOS 7 world and beyond.

It starts by illustrating why simply recompiling the app and fixing any problems does not result in an iOS 7 app. It then takes the reader through the design and implementation process using compare and contrast to an iOS 6 counterpart. Apple has provided new technology in the iOS SDK to enable a developer to implement iOS 7 apps and the implementation of the Post iOS 7 Road Trip uses that technology. But this book should not be considered an "iOS 7" book. While one can expect Apple to extend and enhance the technology in iOS 7 in subsequent iOS releases, it will be doing just that - extending and enhancing. The iOS 6 design has its base in the first iPhone release, six years ago. And while it has evolved somewhat over that time, the design principles have remained fundamentally the same.
